M1 Recon

In 2013 I acquired an authentic WWII US M1 helmet that belonged to a Second Lieutenant who wore it in the Pacific Theatre in WW2. As a nod of reverence for this incredible piece of history, I wanted to (try and) replicate its look on one of my own helmets. I picked the Recon Large as, after all this time, I still haven’t done a fully finished version of this helmet.

The helmet itself is made from resin that’s infused with aluminum powder; the metallic damage you see on the main helmet itself isn’t painted on, but a result of the paint job being physically scraped off to reveal a realistic metallic surface underneath. The MHAS Macrobinoculars are 3D printed in PLA however, so there the damage is mostly painted on. The blue and yellow lights in the ears are paying homage to my Ukrainian heritage and the current moment in history.

Now for the quick in-universe background story of this Recon Large: bucket was recovered from the body of a fallen Mando commander defending his home world from the Empire during the siege of Mandalore.

If you’re interested in how I do these kinds of textured paint jobs, check out the YouTube video below explaining the process.
